A native of Natoma, Kansas, Donald D. Casad moved with his family to Steamboat Springs, Colorado at age 7 and then to Richland for his junior and senior high school years. Upon graduation from high school in 1948, he entered the Navy for one year, and trained as an electronic technican. He then attended Washington State University where he met and married Barbara. He worked at McNary Dam and then the Washington State Highway Department while attending night school for 13 years, obtaining the BSCE in 1963.

The family then moved to Lake Geneva in Federal Way, and Don began his engineering career with ABAM Engineers in Federal Way. He retired from ABAM as principal partner in 1985, then worked as a sole practitioner and forensic engineer for ten years.
