Michal Rosencrans - President’s Award

Michal Rosencrans began her career in 1964 working for the inspection testing lab of Herman Adalist and Associates, Seattle. She was the first woman to be certified by the City of Seattle as a special building inspector at a time when Seattle was the certifying agency used by the entire state of Washington.

Fourteen years later she moved to Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel where she worked in quality control and sales. From 1981-2005, Michal worked for the City of Seattle Department of Construction and Land Use (DCLU), monitoring field inspectors, reviewing concrete mix designs and tests, and doing field spot-checking.

During her many years with Seattle DCLU, she worked tirelessly to improve quality control in the concrete industry and to educate contractors, engineers, and other professionals throughout the area, and she wrote the UBC section on shotcrete.  In addition, she worked on projects with mass concrete, flowable self-leveling high-strength concrete, and worked closely with contractors and engineers to allow innovative construction procedures and products.

She also worked extensively to stop the practice of shortsacking by fringe concrete producers.  Michal’s memorable professional career made her one of the legends of the Pacific Northwest concrete industry.
